Eat and Read Book Club
Looking for a book club? The Eat and Read Book Club meets at Northwind Book & Fiber once a month on the third Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. (Usually from October through May)
Eat and Read is a literature group that strives to read a variety of books from various time periods and locations. The book club was started in 2011 by Heidi Wahlstrom and Jessica Smuda. Each year a list of works is compiled that the group has expressed interest in or that fit into a reading theme. Previous themes have been World Literature, Original Monster Mash, Science Fiction Literature, Women’s Literature, Let’s Visit Paris, Off to Ireland, and Native American Literature.
New members are always welcome. Join any time.
The theme for 2023-24 is Banned American Classics. This year, with the growing, and sadly successful, movement to ban books, the group expressed interest in reading banned books. Instead of those currently being challenged, they will read some of the classics which have been banned over the years. Current attempts to ban books are often for LGBTQ+ themes and discussions of racism. In reading books banned in the past, the group can discuss why they were challenged at that time, as well as why they've stood the test of time as classic American literature.
The first meeting this year is planned for October 21 at 2 p.m. They will discuss The Call of the Wild by Jack London.
Each member is welcome to bring in snacks for the group to share if they would like.
Get ready to expand your horizons through great books!
